<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Focusing on the medieval period in Japan, this study explores how people before the establishment of natural science perceived disasters and how they recovered from them with their ingenuity. It also seeks to identify ideas that contributed to disaster recovery and resilience. The study found that the Hojoki describes the process of Chōmei’s adaptation to the changing environment. By implementing the method of escaping life in the capital, he relativized his place in life and achieved adaptation. The values expressed in the Hojoki that living in the city was pointless were evaluated as a restoration of Chōmei’s selfesteem and an expression of his mental resilience. Disasters and the development of new cities created the challenge of a shortage of building materials, which was solved through innovations in architectural design. Innovative ideas that incorporated relativization into design technology made it possible to comprehensively manage materials and construction times for buildings, which was evaluated as a way of strengthening the resilience of structures. The study concludes that the method of relativization may have contributed to the strengthening of resilience to disasters in the medieval period by accepting areas that humans could not control, while at the same time being inventive about the areas that humans could control.</datacite:description>
