<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">Credit cards, in general, are Japanʼs primary cashless payment method. However, recently, several steps toward other cashless payment methods, such as the adoption of quick response (QR) code payments with government support, use of various authentication methods due to advancements in digital experience, and prevalance of the “buy now, pay later” option in online shops, have been proposed. These new payment methods are showing higher growth rates than credit cards. Therefore, this study examined the strategic trends of credit card companies using published reports and interviews by three credit card operators with the cooperation of the Japan Credit Association. We found three competing relationships: First, competition exists between cash and cashless payments; second, competition exists between different business models under cashless payments, including traditional credit cards, e-money, and QR code payments; and third, competition arises in the most conventional sense among individual companies or groups of companies adopting their respective cashless payment method. The findings indicate, while cashless payments (as a whole) are steadily rising, the companies are attempting to set up new cashless payment businesses as a group to compete with cash payments.</datacite:description>
