China’s digital yuan, also known as e-CNY, has emerged as a notable example within this evolving landscape, drawing increasing attention due to its leading position in experimental initiatives. Initially focused on domestic residents, the digital yuan’s demonstration experiment has now expanded to include people visiting China for business and tourism, showcasing a growing interest in extending the use of the digital yuan to a broader audience. Furthermore, China has taken steps to enhance the adoption of the system by strengthening collaborations with foreign countries. This includes initiatives to integrate the digital yuan into international trade, particularly within the China Free Trade Pilot Zone. Despite the steady expansion of use scenarios and the growing research on the digital yuan, there are still challenges to overcome. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the digital yuan, examining key aspects such as its current background, distinctive features, operational mechanisms, and the potential impacts stemming from digital yuan.
