<datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">It is generally said that business process innovation based on BPM ideas stalled in the 1990s. However, with the advent of the DX era and the remarkable development of social software and cloud services, BPM has once again been studied as an ambidextrous BPM consisting of exploitation and exploration BPM, as if inspired by research on organizational ambidexterity. This paper clarifies the theoretical basis of BPM reconstruction, and also clarifies the contradictions and problems of those studies through a literature review of studies on ambidextrous BPM. In particular, it reveals the contradiction in the perception that exploitative BPM and exploratory BPM are interdependent or complementary, and the problem in the perception that design thinking is an enabler for the balancing and integration of both BPM. Finally, an ambidextrous BPM framework is presented as a superimposed structure of both BPMs. This model can be expected to overcome these contradictions and problems.</datacite:description>
