| 内容記述 | This essay examines “A Wine of Wizardry,” a poem that was published in 1907 by the American George Sterling. The poem draws heavily upon Romanticism and Decadence, and uses imagery that would, in subsequent decades, become associated with the popular genres of fantasy and horror fiction. Sterling was an established literary poet and the poem, while controversial, was accepted at the time as a literary text. Yet just a decade later, after a major shift in American poetry towards imagism and realism, the extravagance of “A Wine of Wizardry” would seem hopelessly outdated. The poem is thus significant in that not only does it mark the end of an era in American poetry, but also in that it points towards a continuation of Romantic and Decadent themes outside of literary genres. This essay examines the poemʼs precedents in both British and American literary traditions, its imagery and structure, and its awkward relationship with American Modernism. | |||||||
