内容記述 | In the summer of 1914, Eliot reached England and began to study philosophy at Merton College, Oxford. In England he met various people interested in literature, including Ezra Pound. With the rather aggressive support of Pound, Eliotʼs poems were gradually known to editors and poets. As a result, in 1915 almost all of his good early poems were published in periodicals. Another important event occurred in 1915. In March of this year Eliot got acquainted with a young woman called Vivien Haigh-Wood at the lunch party held in a room of Scofield Thayer at Merton College. Eliot was strongly attracted and fascinated by Vivien and soon fell in love with her. In June of this year Eliot married Vivien only a few months after they met first. This rather hasty marriage had a deep and complex effect on Eliotʼs poetical works and his real life. This essay deals with some poems of Eliot written in 1914-15 when these series of important and serious events occurred. “To Helen” is a very short poem found as a manuscript. Although the title name reminds us of the very famous poem of Edgar Allan Poe, Eliotʼs poem is very short and a figure associated with Helen and eternal beauty is never described in it. There is another poem with the name of Helen. This is one of the so-called Bostonian poems: ʻBoston Evening Transcript,ʼ ʻCousin Nancy,ʼ and ʻAunt Helen.ʼ After graduating from Smith Academy, Eliot went to Boston to become a student of Milton Academy and then to enter Harvard University. While Boston was a place which was familiar to him, Eliot did not feel right with Boston. Therefore in these poems Eliot turned the cold eyes on luxurious but spiritless life of people of Boston with a cynical attitude like Laforgue. All of them are rather minor poems in which future direction of Eliotʼs poems seems still unsettled. |
