Since 2015, the refugee crisis has posed a dilemma that has challenged Europe’s liberal democratic ideals. The paper will first elucidate the manner in which the border blockade was built in Istria in December 2015 and how the local representatives who gathered in Trieste decided to protest against the border barriers. Next, the paper will detail the conditions observed at the site of the border blockade that occurred in September 2016 between Slovenia and Croatia. The barbed wire fence still remains along this border and the local inhabitants are witness to the events that have unfolded.
