| 内容記述 | This study aims to analyze why some democratic nations undermine democracy in the globalized world. The end of the Cold War and the rapid progress in information technology accelerated globalization in the world. We optimistically thought that globalization would promote democratization, and more people would be able to enjoy freedom of speech and political participation. Yet recently the democratic values have deteriorated in even long-standing democracies. What are the forces that contribute to the undermining of political rights? To answer this question, this article analyzes the role of identity in societies where democratic principles and norms are threatened. Building a collective identity in diverse societies should reduce the rise in political intolerance and protect democratic values. | |||||||||
