| 内容記述 | This paper continues to explore how linguistic disorder, a babel, and its agents, dunces, are represented by late seventeenth-century English satirical poems collected in the section "Literary A airs" of the Poems on Affairs of State, Volume 1. Th e poems this paper discusses are these: Sir George Etherege, Ephelia to Bajazet (1675); Rochester, A Very Heroical Epistle in Answer to Ephelia (1676); Rochester, An Epistolary Essay from M.G. to O.B. upon their Mutual Poems (1679); Rochester, An Allusion to Horace (1675); Sir Car Scroope, In Defense of Satire (1677); Rochester, On the Supposed Author of a Late Poem "In Defense of Satire" (1677); Scroope, The Author's Reply (1677); Rochester, On Poet Ninny (1677). (Etherege sides with Rochester against Dryden and attacks Earl of Mulgrave, a friend of Dryden's. Th e authorship of An Epistolary Essay from M.G. to O.B. ... is debatable.) Four of the poems show part of the literary battles between Rochester with his friends and Dryden with his friends. Th e remaining four show the quarrel between the Rochester circle and Sir Car Scroope, who fought with Rochester before joining Dryden's party. In these exchanges of literary fire I have been able to identify some of those duncical characteristics and practices that I found in my previous paper. I have also found some of the poems to be not so much satires as slanders or libels. The inclination to slander or libel seems stronger with the Rochester circle. Also, some belonging to the circle are mediocre (e.g. An Epistolary Essay from M.G. to O.B. ... and On the Supposed Author ...,) or inferior (e.g. Ephelia to Bajazet and On Poet Ninny). Concerning the battle between Rochester and Scroope, the editor of this collection judges the latter winner and I agree with him. Rochester and his mates often seem to harbor a grudge too great to be contained within the limits of proper satire. Nevertheless, Rochester has moments when he deftly depicts ways of dunces, who are to nd a dwelling place in The Dunciad. |
