内容記述 | Beryl Bainbridge's 'Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie' is a short story published in 1985. Th e story is set in Liverpool in the early 1980s. Th e Hendersons live in a tower block. About a decade ago they moved there from an old terraced house where the residents had a strong sense of close-knit community. Now the protagonist Charles Henderson feels estranged living on a par with the clouds. His sense of discomfort is closely related with the radical social change at the time. Margaret atcher privatized public industries and services and pressed free competition on people. Charles cannot adapt himself to the competitive society and only thinks back to the good old times. Alec is irritated with his father. He thinks that his father has restricted his intellectual freedom in the name of love. He also considers his father's generation responsible for the emergence of the Thatcherite neo-liberalism. Intellectually superior to his father, Alec denies the truth of everything he says. As a result, Charles's speech is almost always ignored by his family. His status as 'bread-winner' has become relatively lower because both his wife and his son are earning wages now. Two weeks before Christmas, Mrs Henderson, who is working as a cleaning woman, is given by her employer tickets for Peter Pan and the family go to the theatre. After seeing the fi rst three acts, Charles, Alec and Moira, Charles's married daughter, go to the bar and talk about the pantomime. Asked by Moira why Mr Darling was dressed up as Captain Hook, Alec answers that the kind Mr Darling and the brutal Captain Hook are two halves of the same man and that, like fathers in real life, Mr Darling wants to destroy his children. With this radical opinion, Alec expresses his opposition to his father and the older generation. Quite naturally, Charles's indigestion becomes worse during Act Four. Although he can hardly concentrate on the stage, he is attracted by the dramatic scene at the end of Act Four. Peter Pan asks the audience to clap hands to save the life of Tinkerbell who is dying because she has drunk the medicine for Peter to which Hook has added some poison. Tinkerbell's light is ickering; the audience realize that she is on the brink of death and start clapping loudly. Tink's blinking light symbolizes the declining economy of Britain and the audience clapping their hands until they are stinging the British people forced into a erce competition to save the 'sick' country. In the middle of the thunderous clapping, Charles dies from a heart attack. His call for help is ignored as usual by his wife; she is absorbed in the pantomime. The man who has been treated like a living dead just because he is not competitive enough is now really dead. Th e title of the story can be interpreted not only as hinting at the possibility of solidarity among Peter Pan-like or Charles-like uncompetitive people but also as suggesting that the good, old society Charles remembers is just a never, never land. | |||||||||
