| 内容記述 | The main purpose of this paper is to explore Adam Smith’s（ 1723－1790） moral theory and Martha Nussbaum’s （1947－） analysis of emotions, keeping possible future development of sentimentalism theory which deals with modern social problems in mind. Since both Smith and Nussbaum share a basic position that sentiments and emotions are essential to argue morality and laws, and Nussbaum herself refers to Smith occasionally in order to underpin her theory, it can be expected that comparing their theories not only reveals the significance of Smith’s moral theory but also enriches Nussbaum’s discussion which targets modern social problems. In order to accomplish this aim, firstly it is attempted to grasp the fundamental elements in Smith’s moral theory. These elements include his concept of ‘sympathy’, ‘the impartial spectator’ and his idea of resentment. Then Nussbaum’s argument is examined, and it is showed that Nussbaum has deepened her analysis of anger through the two books which are treated in this paper. In conclusion, it is suggested that some common features can be detected in Smith and Nussbaum. Particularly, Smith’s idea about resentment and laws which is based on his concept of ‘sympathy’ and ‘the impartial spectator’ is notable because Nussbaum acknowledges that Smith’s idea of ‘the impartial spectator’ would have an important role in order to make anger beneficial to society. |
