As many people in Japan are averse to casinos, promoters avoid using images of gambling as far as possible in their publicity campaigns. These promoters are relatively indifferent to the effects of the promotional activities in which they engage as part of their bid to enter the Japanese market successfully. This study examined the perceptions of those whose attitudes toward casinos are generally negative using a hypothetical human cognitive model. Data obtained via questionnaire survey from a total of 400 subjects were analysed. The studyʼs main objective was to explore peopleʼs perceptions of casinos, focusing on Japan in its East Asian context, by defining ʻparticipation in casinosʼ as participation in casino-based gambling activities, such as poker, blackjack and baccarat.
