| 内容記述 | Influence study in literature would consist of three aspects:influence from the contemporary poets,influence from the past and influence from other cultures.When we consider the Oriental revival in 19th-century England,it is important to examine how Oriental culture or literary influence spread among Romantic works.This study deals with a large number of Thomas Moore's works with one of the Oriental work called Bahar Danush by ʻInāyat Allāh,which is said to have influenced Moore.The purpose of this paper is first to analyze quantitatively whether the Orientspecific terms found in Bahar Danush are used in Moore's works as well using cosine similarity,and then to consider Oriental influence to see how the same terms are used in Moore's works.This paper found that a total of 50 poems showed values of cosine similarity.This means that 50 poems use at least one of the same terms as Bahar Danush.The pseudo-Oriental poem Lalla Rookh shares 46 different terms with Bahar Danush,"Evening in Greece" shares five,"Letter VI"in Two Penny Post-Bag shares four,and other poems share one to three terms.At least three of Moore's works,Lalla Rookh,Two Penny Post-Bag,and The Love of the Angels originally had Oriental themes and were considered to share a number of terms,yet only Lalla Rookh shares a lot of terms with Bahar Danush.When we consider the usage of Oriental terms in Moore's work,seven types of usage are found:1.another culture compared to his own culture; 2.interest in the different culture; 3.desire to have exact knowledge of the world; and 4.common words which have already entered into 19th-century Britain or Moore's work; 5.biblical terms; 6.translations; and 7.notes and prefaces.Types 1 to 3 show positive or negative interest in the Orient as otherness,yet type 4 shows the word peri had already been incorporated into the Romantics and 19th-century society.The paper concludes that by using cosine similarity,we could determine the influence of the Orient on Moore's works and can trace the use of words as both signs of otherness and of their own culture. | |||||||||
