内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This is the story of Claus Hinrich Heitmann. It is a continuation of a project described in this journal in 2022, which focussed on Friederike Elizabetha Ankerholz. (Woollerton, 2023) Friederike was my paternal great grandmother, a German immigrant to England in 1858, who in 1875 married Claus Hinrich Heitmann, another German, in London. While the article in 2023 focussed on Friederike, this article will examine Claus Hinrich’s life in as much detail as possible.
Claus Hinrich was a German emigrant who came to London to seek a better life than the one he was living in his native Hannover. From the outset, he may just seem like an ordinary, anonymous and unremarkable man, but his life was touched by important social, political and economic events that have largely been forgotten, but which still merit our attention. More than 120 years have passed since Claus Hinrich’s death and all information regarding his character and personality have been lost; the common fate of the poor, the ordinary, the unremarkable members of our societies around the world. This is not just the effect of time, however. It has also been due to the conscious desire to erase parts of his past and identity by members of his own family, who tried to purge Claus Hinrich and his origins from their family history and, in so doing, either escape their shame or persecution for Claus Hinrich’s origins in the society where they lived.
This paper will attempt to use the facts that are known about Claus Hinrich and knowledge of the wider socio-economic environment in which he lived to make valid assumptions about what his life was like and describe it to the reader. Claus Hinrich’s life story was not only an intriguing mystery to be solved, but the reconstruction process also became part of a duty to restore something of his identity and pass that knowledge on to his descendants.
