| 内容記述 | America’s Environmental Movement, created in response to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962), a book that documented the dangers of pesticide overuse, has undergone unfathomable change. It began as a tepid challenge to industrial pollution. Its white-middle-class founders feared this was undermining its quality of life, the reason for its broad-based support. This led in the 1970s to landmark legislation to reduce pollution and species extinction. From the early 1980s, however, when deregulation became the government’s mantra (regulations were seen by then as stymieing economic growth), the movement lost steam as citizens lost interest in it. The right-wing demonized it as merely a collection of out-of-touch tree-huggers, forcing it to the political fringes where it languished as only a ghost of what it once had been. Minorities viewed the movement, correctly as it turns out, as benefitting only the well-off. Then, from the early 1990s, after opening up to Indigenous peoples and other minorities, it once again become a vital force. The Green New Deal (2019) is just one of its positive outcomes. America’s Environmental Movement, then, is not only a study of change, adaptation, and perseverance, but also of how the values of marginalized groups can raise a movement’s vision to previously unimaginable heights. “Environmental Justice,” which I will discuss here, was an articulation for greater openness to the real sufferers of toxic pollution, those at the bottom of the economic pyramid. This article attempts to highlight some of this remarkable evolution. Today—thanks to these revolutionary changes—racial equality, social justice, and environmental justice are forever linked. | |||||||
