| 内容記述 | This paper aims to elucidate the impact of the Imperial Funeral of Empress Dowager Eishō on the discourse of funeral reforms by analyzing the discussions among intellectuals. Empress Dowager Eishō passed away on January 11, 1897, marking a significant event as the first Imperial Funeral after the Meiji Restoration. Its implementation involved not only administrative coordination within the Imperial Household Agency and the Cabinet but also the inclusion of Shinto and Buddhist elements in the religious ceremonies. Such integration was also observed in civil society. In the period surrounding the Imperial Funeral, intellectuals, as reflected in the newspaper ‘Nihon’ and other journals, began discussing the organization of funeral rituals, including mourning attire, considering the relationship between the Imperial Funeral and ordinary people. Within these discussions, there was a conscious awareness of comparisons with the funerals of ordinary citizens. Some of these ideas became integral to the discourse on funeral reforms within the burgeoning Movement to Improve Social Customs that gained momentum in the following year and were practically implemented through the funeral reform initiatives of the intellectual class. | |||||||||||
