| 内容記述 | Today’s world has inherited its global economic system from the Colonial Era (1585-1763), not fundamentally different from the one of five-hundred years ago, of extractive economics (Acemoglu and Robinson 2019: 257). Spain and Portugal created this model when they conquered and exploited much of the world for slave labor and raw materials. As England and other European countries, the latecomers, began their own versions, they created a more sophisticated system: Centralized stock markets, laissez faire free-markets, supply-and-demand networks, credit systems, balance of trade formulas, division of labor concepts—to only name a few that remain central to the global-market’s “language of good and evil” (Fukuyama 1995: 36). None of this changed the system’s fundamental objective, however, that of siphoning off the world’s labor and resources (Sachs 2005: 38-42). Reformation Christianity created this system’s perpetuation and ultimately its fierce challenges to it. England, some scholars say, spent more ending slavery than it profited from slavery (Sowell 1994: 215), pressured as it was by the unrelenting protests from radical Christian sects. Unfortunately, religious challenges, joined later by powerful secular ideologies, have yet to deliver a death-blow to its modus operandi. The division of victimizers and victims seems calcified (Sachs 2005: 42), leaving many to wonder if a more humane economic system is possible. While the Fair-Trade programs I will discuss have yet to dismantle this extractive system, these, among many other humanitarian efforts, have made significant headway in affixing an ethical frame of reference internationally. Now, in its fourth decade, Fair-Trade certification has grown through many missteps—even setbacks—to become not only a moral conscience but also an embryonic example of a future with greater economic equity. |
