| 内容記述 | This study examines the late twelfth-century Life of Stephen of Obazine, seeking to elucidate how the abbey navigated its complex relationships with the regional society. The Vita constructs the image of Stephen as a just mediator, a defender of peasants, and a figure who ensured social cohesion through both material aid and posthumous miracles, thereby reinforcing the monastery’s role as a stabilising force in the Limousin region. A comparison of different manuscript traditions reveals significant textual variations, reflecting shifting institutional and regional concerns. While the Obazine version emphasises its deep ties to local communities, later versions circulated within the Cistercian Order reduce or erase regional markers, aligning Stephen’s sanctity with broader monastic ideals. Given Obazine’s complex origins, the monastery accommodated diverse views on how to engage with lay society. The Vita played a crucial role in mediating these perspectives, fostering internal unity, and shaping a shared institutional identity. Thus, the Vita can be understood as a medium that actively negotiated tensions on multiple levels: within the community itself, between the customs of Obazine and the norms of the Order, and between the monastery and its surrounding society. By proposing a moral vision of governance and economic justice, the text not only reinforced monastic cohesion but also sought to integrate the monastery into its local environment and position it as a central force in shaping the regional social order. | |||||||||
