The participants could indicate that their opinion was “Neutral.” We asked the participants to estimate the distribution of responses from “students currently in the classroom” for each option. Even those who responded “Neutral” tended to assume that their chosen option was others’ most likely response, thus, the “false consensus effect” was observed. However, participants’ estimated distribution of responses from “ordinary people in Japanese society” did not show a similar tendency. Furthermore, we attempted to conceptualize the pattern comprising the percentage estimates for each option as a “waveform” and examined the specific distribution of each pattern. The distribution of each “waveform” pattern between the “Neutral” group and the other groups differed greatly.
