| 内容記述 | The present paper seeks to contribute to research on the role of manufacturing engineering (ME) in integrating new product development (NPD) and manufacturing at Toyota by placing recent developments in how ME is organized at Toyota into historical context to highlight the continuity of the present system, while acknowledging important changes. Unlike NPD and manufacturing, ME does not have its own local interest, so ME is well positioned to represent the end user’s interest, namely customer satisfaction. The development of a new family of vehicle platforms (TNGA) at Toyota from the mid-2010s was used as a trigger to increase the system integrating role of ME in the pursuit of new designs that would result in greater customer satisfaction. The 2017 Camry development project is presented as a case study to illustrate how ME has been charged with working more collaboratively with product engineering at Toyota. The paper closes by arguing that the persistent integrality of automobiles also largely holds for battery electric vehicles, which suggests the capabilities of Toyota in ME will continue to remain valuable and a potential source of competitive advantage. | |||||||
