| 内容記述 | This article is derived from a presentation delivered at the inaugural “China-Japan-Korea+X” Cooperation Think Tank Forum, which took place in Shanghai on May 17, 2025. Sponsored by the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), the forum brought together scholars and policymakers from Northeast and Southeast Asia to examine regional resilience in the context of escalating geopolitical tensions. The authorʼs presentation, entitled “Political Resilience and Trust-Building Measures in China-Japan-Korea+ Cooperation,” analyzed Japanʼs formulation of a strategic framework designed to navigate the intensifying U.S.‒China rivalry without succumbing to a binary alignment. This article serves as a revised and retitled version of that presentation, now published as “Japanʼs ʻThird Wayʼ in an Era of Great Power Competition.” Japanʼs “third way” strategy is founded on four interconnected pillars: strategic diversification, institutional continuity, narrative management, and functional integration. Collectively, these components provide a buffer against external shocks, sustain diplomatic efforts despite political volatility, counter disinformation, and facilitate pragmatic cooperation in non-contentious areas. Drawing inspiration from ASEANʼs incrementalism, Japan cultivates trust through shared actions rather than ideological consensus. This framework not only elucidates Japanʼs current regional posture but also presents a potential model for diplomacy in divided and historically contentious regions. Ultimately, Japanʼs approach offers a viable alternative to confrontation or disengagement, delineating a pathway toward stability through engagement, adaptability, and long-term trust-building. |
