| 内容記述 | In this paper we argue that there was a turning point in the science of economics around 1960's, which revolutionized the way human behavior and economic order are apprehended in economic theory. In retrospect, this was due to a return to Aristotle's ethics and his idea of phronesis (practical wisdom). It was brought about by the theory of rational expectations, which was proposed counter to the then dominant Keynesian theory. The new theory is a future-oriented theory based on intertemporal decision making, while the Keynesian theory is a past-oriented and adaptive theory that consists in uncovering a stable structure of the economy from the data of its past performance and the past decisions of economic agents. We show in what sense this was a return to Aristotle's ethics, first by reviewing what Aristotle has to say in Metaphysica and Nichomachean Ethics, and then by highlighting the fundamental difference between the theory of rational expectations and the Keynesian theory from the standpoint of the ethicality of human being. This paper also has a tacit purpose of demonstrating the usefulness of philosophical argument in understanding the nature of human decision making and economic order. | |||||||||
