The atmosphere for cordial relations between the two nations was symbolized by Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro and Chinese General Secretary Hu Yaobang. Having visited China in 1973 and 1980, Nakasone established a honeymoon period with Hu. Hu visited Japan in 1983 and attached importance to the relationship with Japan until his downfall.
