| 内容記述 | From the mid-1970s till the late 1990s, the Indian Province （branch） of the Sisters of Divine Savior undertook an ambitious traditional medicine project in Tamil Nadu, South India. The aim of the project was the improvement of primary health care with traditional medicine （nattu marundhu） in a particular rural area. This paper will consider the reasons why this project is no longer functional and under which conditions it was started in the first place. The Indian Province of the Sisters of Divine Savior was created in 1973 to serve people in the poor areas of Tamil Nadu. Initially that Province started with eleven nuns who had received their training in Europe. They had a mission policy of carrying out small-scale activities to meet diverse needs in the region, one being health care. At that time, people could hardly afford to visit medical institutions due to poor traffic conditions and economic difficulties. The nuns therefore resolved to start a nattu marundhu project which would offer people cheaper and more accessible forms of health care and medicine. A nattu marundhu project was optimal as primary health care for the poor. Initially, prejudice against traditional medicine amongst the people was so strong that the project did not work well. Gradually, however, after seeing the effects and advantages of this kind of medicine, people became more receptive to it, and the project proceeded successfully. But despite the success of the project, it finally became dormant in the late 90s for reasons that will be explained in this paper. |
