内容記述 | Dazai Shundai (1680-1747) was a Confucian scholar in the mid-Edo period in Japan. He was well-known for his achievements in economics, and he was also a scholar of the Chinese classics who inherited Ogyu Sorai’s theory of the Kobunjigaku. Although Shundai was known as anti-Buddhist in general, he was an intimate acquaintance of many bonzes in literary terms by virtue of his education in the Chinese classics. On this basis, Shundai used his knowledge of Chinese writing to revise the Amitabha Sutra that Kumārajīva translated into Chinese. The title of the book in his revision was Shūsatsu-Amida-Kyō. In this paper, I will introduce some significant points of the Shūsatsu-Amida-Kyō, which are not widely known. Shūsatsu-Amida-Kyō is not a re-translation from the original text in Sanskrit. Rather, it is just the revision of Chinese writing of Buddhist scriptures translated into Chinese. Critics have criticized that point. But this is not the criteria to be used to evaluate the Shūsatsu-Amida-Kyō. Buddhist texts conveyed the words of Buddha not as a sacred book but as a relatively simple text that was evaluated by the skill of the composition. I think that it is possible to evaluate the results of an initial empirical study of Buddhism in the Edo period. | |||||||||
