In doing so, we identify the gender difference in the parenting burden. Our results show that the gender with higher parenting costs, generally women, obtain lower satisfaction from having children. In particular, we find that the women’s disadvantage in life satisfaction is smaller in social democratic and liberal counties where extensive childcare supports are provided.
