| 内容記述 | This article presents an examination of the logic of strategic behavior in multiparty competition in Japan using Exchange Network Theory. The Japanese party system had remained more or less stable from 1955 to 1993. However, the change of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that took place in 1993 and afterwards engendered instability of the Japanese party system and has transformed Japanese politics. The first change was that many political parties split into several factions. The LDP split into three parties in 1993, thereafter splitting into several factions during 2005-2009. The New Frontier Party split into two factions in 1996. The Democratic Party of Japan split into two factions in 2011. The second change was that parties insisted on only one policy or issue in elections and have been tenacious in pursuit of bills in committees. Prime Minister Koizumi strongly insisted only on the reform of Postal Service Privatization in the Diet and in the election in 2005. The Your Party has been insisting on the reform of national public officers’ systems. Some Local Parties are insisting on the reform of local government systems or reduction of taxes. These changes in party behavior were not common before 1993. These political actions represent novel strategies for multiparty competition. Results show that actions of parties are actually rational, although they might appear to be irrational. |
