内容記述 | This paper discusses the legacy of Norman Rockwell, one of America’s most famous and popular illustrator-artists, best known for the covers of mass-circulation magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post in the first half of the twentieth century. From his early success as an illustrator, there was a deep discrepancy between the general public who cherished his works and art critics who disdained them. Around the turn of the century, however, a major critical and fi nancial reappraisal took place. Today his works command the highest prices in the American Art category at the major auction houses. With growing interest both in the popular and the academic areas, the study of Rockwell and his works has entered a different phase, exploring new themes and viewpoints. The aim of this article is to present a historical overview of the receptions of and critical responses to Rockwell in the US, and to contextualize the current reassessment in light of American society and history. Chronologically tracing crucial responses to Rockwell, this study reviews his great success as a commercial artist, his position in art history, and the relationship with (post)modern art, and also examines the responses at each time in the socio-historical contexts, so as to offer an essential approach for the analysis of Rockwell. | |||||||||
