Although critical intellectuals aim for achieving a more open society throughout their social critique, as some of Japanese intellectuals’ discussion show, critical intellectuals’ social critique is often understood as that representing their own interest and social status, not that forming common interest of the society. Confronting this problem, this paper inquires the mechanism of which the social critique becomes a statement of self-interest by focusing on Edward Said’s concept of abduction which he proposes as the practice of critical intellectuals. This paper states that social critique and critical knowledge need to be adjusted to the contemporary world where the logic of market is expanding among people’s mind and practice.
