| 内容記述 | In A Laodicean, actions such as touching hands and scenes like European journeys are repeated or copied to reveal that gender roles can be reversed and that gender is not steadfast but something fluid. A Laodicean also copies literary works such as Love’s Labourʼs Lost and Frankenstein. However, they are not faithfully followed; a variety of deviations interfere with a complete copy of the original work. In addition, in A Laodicean, paintings and photographs, rather than correctly duplicate the model, distort the image of the subject, and make it difficult to find the truth. Stancy Castle, the backdrop of this novel, is a building which is a collection of copies of architectural styles from various periods, and whose original appearance is totally unknown. As a result, from this novel emerges a world with no single origin or solid foundation, in other words, an unreliable world filled with copies and misrepresentations that lie to and deceive the characters. Although A Laocdicean cannot be said to be a masterpiece of Hardy, it is an impressive, interesting novel for its effective description of this unique world. | |||||||
