内容記述 | The year 1915 was a very significant one for T. S. Eliot. In this year his poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was published in Poetry, a poetry magazine founded by Harriet Monroe. This was the first time his poem appeared in a magazine available on the market. Subsequently his other poems were published various magazines and anthologies. “Portrait of a Lady” and “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” were among them. Gradually his name became known to those who loved poems and literature. After the publication of “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” Eliot sent several poems to Poetry. All of them were published in that magazine except for one poem, which was “The Death of Saint Narcissus.” This work was also supposed to be published with his other works in Poetry, but for some reason it was canceled. While the poem itself remained unpublished for more than thirty years, part of the poem were revised and inserted in lines of The Waste Land. “The Death of Saint Narcissus” has some rather peculiar characteristics. Although the title suggests that this poem focusses on the life and death of a Christian saint, there is almost nothing about biographical statement about a religious figure. In addition, to many readers the protagonist of this poem, “Saint Narcissus” is associated with the mythical figure that appeared in Ovidʼ s Metamorphoses, not with the historical figure who was a bishop of Jerusalemin the 2nd century. “Saint Narcissus” in this poem has a memory of his own metamorphoses: he was a tree, fish, and a girl. Finally he was shot by arrows like Saint Sebastian, the protagonist in Eliotʼs another poem, “The Love Song of St. Sebastian.” Eliot tried to deal with these interesting and complicated subjects in this poem; however, many of them remained unsolved, and carried over to The Waste Land. |
