This paper is the first to analyse the country’s unlisted liquor companies. Specifically, we sent a questionnary to family wineries and examined how small family wineries operate. We also sent another similar questionnary to Awamori brewing companies.  For wineries and Awamori brewing compaies, similarities belonging to the liquor industry are that their volume of production is low and the number of employees is small. A member of the founding family tends to be the CEO. Both wineries and Awamori brewing companies point out easier implementation of long-term strategies and smooth switching of management prerogative as merits of family-run businesses. It is also revealed that they regard changes in legal system would have a significant impact on their management. Circumstances surrounding wine and Awamori sectors are different but most companies plan to expand their scale of operation.
