内容記述 | ʻEarly in the year 1846 there appeared on the American literary scene . . . a book by a young writer hitherto unknown which was destined shortly to start a new and exciting literary vogue, to launch an unemployed sailor on a briefly successful career as author, and to foreshadow the creation a few years later of one of the worldʼ s undoubted masterpieces,ʼ says Tyrus Hillway in his Herman Melville. The ʻyoung writerʼ is Herman Melville and ʻone of the worldʼs undoubted masterpiecesʼ is Moby Dick. It is well known and the tragic irony that Melville lost his literary fame because of the book and the next work Pierre. As an obituary of Melville tells, although Melville ʻwas once one of the most popular writers in the United States, . . . Of late years Mr. Melville─ probably because he had ceased his literary activity─has fallen into a literary decline, as the result of which his books are now little known.ʼ It is most certain that ʻhis own generation had long thought him dead. So quiet had been the later years of his life.ʼ ʻWhen he died in 1891, his works had been relegated . . . to the dust heap of adolescent adventure stories, and he was well-nigh forgotten both as author and as man,ʼ continues Hillway. Is that so? If we follow Melvilleʼs life and his works carefully, weʼll find out he was not one of those who disappeared quietly from the stage of life. ʻThe Catskill Eagleʼ of Moby Dick is the key. The objective of this paper is to show how Melville faced life of his own and what he tried to imply by the flight of ʻthe Catskill Eagleʼ. |
