| 内容記述 | This paper is a case study to examine Chinese diplomacy during the Sino-Japanese War period focusing to W. W. Yen’s visit to the United States from October 1939 to February 1940. Yen was a veteran diplomat who had served as the Chinese Premier,Foreign Minister and the Ambassador to the Soviet Union. Yen’s visit to the U. S. was originally an unofficial one; he was invited to attend the 7th Conference convened by the Institute of Pacific Relations, an international NGO and the forum of intellectuals around the Pacific Area. Besides this, he was also assigned by Chinese Government in Chongqing the mission to act as a special envoy to the U. S., bringing Chiang Kai-shek’s personal letter to the President F. D. Roosevelt. He had met the President, the Secretary of State Hull and other officials of State Department and influential members in the Senate and the Congress, asking U. S. to give substantive aid to China and also to apply severe sanctions to Japan. Although Yen had stayed in U. S. only for 4 months, he made utmost efforts to achieve such aim and was highly esteemed by Chiang Kai-shek. | |||||||||
