| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to list the memorials and memorial ceremonies held for US soldiers who died during World War and immediately after the end of the WWII in Japan, and to explore why Japanese people commemorate enemy soldiers. The research was primarily conducted from June 2016 to May 2018. Subsequently, intermittent research was continued, and as of January 2024, the collected materials and interview records were organized and compiled into this thesis. It was found that there were 33 cases (in 22 prefectures) of memorials and memorial ceremonies related to crashed US military aircraft, such as B-29, nationwide. The total number of crashed US military aircrafts related to World War II was 44, consisting of 30 B-29s, 2 B-24s, 2 B-25s, 2 P-47s, 2 P-51s, 3 TBM Avengers, 2 F4U Corsair, and 1 B-17H rescue aircraft. The main reason for commemorating enemy soldiers is “empathy, sympathy, and respect for the dead and their families.” It was found that memories of those who witnessed the bodies of B-29 crew members or the mistreatment of surviving crew members or their bodies are very vivid. Furthermore, it was found that the determination to oppose war and preserve memories is derived from witnessing these events in youth and forms the basis of memorial construction. Additionally, several commonalities were identified among the 33 cases. First, most of those who conducted burials and established graves for American soldiers during World War II were temple priests from the spirit of Buddhism. Second, the construction, restoration, and memorial ceremonies were often carried out in conjunction with the 50th, 60th anniversary of the end of the war. Third, it was revealed that those who witnessed the B-29 crashes, crash sites, or mistreatment of prisoners played a central role in subsequent memorial activities. |
