| 内容記述 | The South China Sea has long been the center of conflicts between the surrounding countries, especially China, Vietnam and the Philippines, over possession of its islands,which ensure control of an exclusive economic zone （EEZ）. The latter two countries form part of ASEAN. The rapid rise of China in recent years is intensifying these conflicts. International concern has been rapidly drawn to this area because, on the one hand, China has declared the area part of its core interests since 2010 and, on the other hand, the USA has started regarding these conflicts as a national security issue,emphasizing that they impede its national interest, namely, freedom of navigation. The shift in US military strategy to a rebalance or pivot towards Asia is adding importance to these conflicts. It is anticipated that ASEAN’s collective negotiating power, the proper involvement of large outside powers, and multilateral dialogue frameworks will help alleviate the conflicts and avoid an outbreak of hostilities. | |||||||||
