内容記述 | Even though Flannery Oʼ Connor proclaimed herself as a “novelist who is a Catholic,” there are only four stories in which she introduced Catholic characters. This article examines “A Temple of the Holy Ghost,” which comprises the most explicit Catholic narrative among all her works. In OʼConnorʼs works, such as Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away, the feeling of emptiness reveals the charactersʼ acute hunger for God. Focusing on the twelve-year-old female protagonist in “A Temple of the Holy Ghost,” I examine how the feeling of emptiness is related to her search for identity. The unnamed protagonist at the onset of puberty feels uncertain about her future. She feels uncomfortable with her gender role as a teenage girl and lacks confidence in her religious attitude because she believes she has committed the sin of Pride. Although she is aware of this, her anxiety leads to behaviors hurtful to others. In her search for identity, however, she is given a religious self-image of “a temple of the Holy Ghost.” The self-image can subordinate the categories of male or female under a more powerful religious identity, which she is eager to attain. Then, the image of a self-assured carnival hermaphrodite, who also identifies him/herself as “a temple of the Holy Ghost” prepares her to accept all that she is. After these preparations, her emptiness is finally but momentarily fulfilled by Christ when the priest raises the Host in the chapel, which is also “a temple of the Holy Ghost.” | |||||
