Samarium diiodide (SmI2) in the copresence of chlorotrimethylsilane reduces cyclic ketones efficiently, compared with samarium diiodide alone, providing the corresponding reductive coupling products, alcohols, and their silyl ethers with the formation of enol silyl ethers. Possible reaction pathways for this reduction are discussed in detail. In addition, this paper also deals with the reduction of alkyl aryl ketones using a mixed system of metallic samarium and chlorotrimethylsilane, which leads to the pinacol coupling of ketones. The stereoselectivity of this coupling reaction is also investigated. |
