| 内容記述 | Hundreds of referendums on municipal amalgamation proposals were held during the first half of 2000s in Japan. Many scholars have analyzed voter turnout and/or the results of these referendums. In this paper, I reanalyze referendums held before March 2005 building upon analyses by Sunahara （2018）. I find that turnout tends to be lower in referendums held without adequate time to inform voters of the referendum and the options on the ballot. I also find that referendums that offer voters more options reduce turnout. These findings suggest that referendums should be designed to ensure that voters are well-informed and understand the implications of each of their options. | |||||||||
